What exactly is a professional poker player?

I was talking with a new co-worker and she told me that her boyfriend is a professional poker player. I’ve never heard that before. Everyone that I know who plays poker does it once a week or once a month for fun. I asked her if he plays every day and she said yes. He’s 21 years old. I asked if he pays taxes on his winnings like employees do on wages and she said, “well, waitresses don’t claim all their tips.”

Can anyone give me an overview of a career as a professional poker player since I’m clueless? How do they find work? How much do they make? What are the possitives & negatives of such a career? Is it something someone can do their whole life?

What are the tax implications of winning online poker?

Want to learn about how Texas Hold’Em can be more than just a game?

Come hear Harvard Law School professor Charles Nesson and Harvard Law student Andrew Woods talk about the ways that poker can be used as a powerful tool for teaching core negotiation and business skills. Professor Nesson is the founder of the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS), an organization focused on developing an academic curriculum using poker as a teaching tool. Professor Nesson and Mr. Woods believe that poker can be used to teach important life skills such as game theory, strategic thinking, risk assessment, and money management in an engaging and interactive way.

Speaker: Prof. Charles Nesson
Charles Nesson was born in 1939. He is a Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and the founder of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society (a research center which focuses on the legal study of cyberspace) and of the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society. He is author of Evidence, with Murray and Green, and has participated in several cases before the Supreme Court, including Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals. In 1971, Nesson defended Daniel Ellsberg in the Pentagon Papers case. He was co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the case against W.R. Grace that was made into the film A Civil Action.

Nesson attended Harvard College as an undergraduate, and then Harvard Law School where he joined the list of only a handful of people in history to have graduated summa cum laude. Nesson was a law clerk to Justice John Marshall Harlan II on the US Supreme Court, 1965 term. He then worked as a special assistant in the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. His first case, White v. Crook, made race and gender-based jury selection in Alabama unconstitutional. Nesson joined the Harvard Law School faculty in 1966, and was tenured in 1969.

How does the general public perceive poker or professional poker players?

What do people generally link poker players with?
I am doing a university study on gambling(specifically poker) so anyone’s replies are appreciated. It seems to me that many people aren’t very enthusiastic about the notion of people playing poker for a living.

What do females and/or working males think about poker in general? Would you be weary of dating or befriending someone who plays poker? is it seen as ’sleazy’ or in a negative light by alot of people?

What is the best poker site for low limit players?

I’ve got titan poker and party poker but everybody seems to be insanely tight, even down to the micro-limit tables like $0.05/$0.10. which poker sites start at higher levels and so are more loose in the lower tables. because in these two, the big blind wins about half the pots just by nobody calling.

Poker Connects - Poker Players and Home Games in Philadelphia - an article by Poker Connect

Poker Connects announces its Beta launch to members of the Philadelphia poker community. PokerConnects is a forum to help poker players find home games in the Philadelphia area. The website functions similarly to craigslist and other classified sites. Hosts can post their game using the “create a game” form, filling out details of their home games. Players can then browse games and contact the hosts directly. Similarly, players can post what they are looking for with the “looking for a game” form, and hosts of games can then contact them directly. PokerConnects is completely anonymous and free to use. No registration or login is required.

PokerConnects is currently only open to members of the Philadelphia poker community, but we hope to expand the site to other cities in the near future.
